Lower Dolpo Trek, the trek that caters the most beautiful cultural and natural aspects of the remote west of Nepal is truly one of the most beautiful offbeat treks of Nepal. Captured beautifully by French filmmaker Eric Valli Dolpo, one of the least frequented regions of Nepal is choke full with unique cultural treasures in the primitive form and the magnificence of nature untouched and unexplored.

Considered best to trek during the springs and autumns in Nepal, Lower Dolpo Trek is a moderately challenging trek that is operated in Full Board Basis. Crossing over the challenging passes like Numa La and Baga La along with the limited services catered throughout the trek make this walking journey a lifetime experience in the wilderness. Can I approach this trek easily?

If you have, the extreme ability to walk around 6-8 hours a day with a light daypack and passionate feeling, this trek will be highly suitable as this is moderate trek. It is fact that having walk in higher altitudes is definitely more physically demanding than walking in lower altitudes. Therefore, you need to be prepared to adjust in the high altitude. Advance Adventure Kindly request to all the clients to prepare themselves for Lower Dolpo Trek 18 day/s by Jogging and exercising regularly at least 3 months prior to the start of the trek. If you have the subtle experiences of walking /trekking in high altitude, environment this trek will be really easier. Your Past hiking experiences may be worthy but you need special technical skill for this trek. Day 01: Arrival day in Kathmandu

On arrival to Kathmandu; we will greet you at the airport and transfer to your trip hotel. Later we meet and take you and brief you on the Tsum Valley Cultural Trek with us and introduce your trekking guide. Evening, we host welcome dinner at one of the finest local restaurant in Kathmandu with music and ethnic dance. Overnight at Kathmandu Hotel.

Day 02: Day Guided Tour in Kathmandu Valley. Trek Preparation Day

Today after breakfast we will start the half-day tour of Kathmandu Valley. Kathmandu Valley is probably one of the most interesting cultural valleys with a superb blend of Hinduism and Buddhism and mega edifices dedicated to deities of these religions. Moreover, the historic courtyards and palaces inside Kathmandu are artistically fascinating, which date back to ancient and medieval eras. Firstly, we will visit the pilgrimage sites of Hindus- Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most important shrine of Shiva temples on the subcontinent which is an abode of thousands of devotees, Saddhus (holy men/Baba). The sights of cremating dead bodies most of the times in the holy riverbank of Bagmati is an offbeat cultural experience. From Pashupatinath we drive to nearby Buddhanath, the biggest Buddhist monastery in Asia-  This Stupa is one of the holy Stupas. You can circumambulate around this mega shrine clockwise to witness Himalayan culture scattered everywhere at Boudhanath.

Day 03: Flight from Kathmandu to Nepagunj

After a morning breakfast in hotel today as per the flight schedule for Nepalgunj you will be transfer to the domestic airport for one hour scenic flight to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj is the wonderful town located in Western Nepal, near Nepal-India Border. This town is the gateway to Simkot, Humla. The cultural richness of this interesting Terai town is beyond comparable. The town itself is the showcase of the diverse culture of Nepal. Overnight at hotel in Nepaljung.

Day 04: Fly to Jhupal (Dolpo) & trek to Dunai, 2-3 hrs walk

Today after an early breakfast transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Jhupal, a super scenic flight of 45minutes brings you at Jhupal over the Himalayan foothills, with views of Himalayan peaks to the north. On arriving at Jhupal our other trekking staffs will receive you. Our first day adventure begins through the terraced fields to the Bheri River and the narrow gorge taking 2-3 hours to camp at Dunai. Dunai is the administrative headquarter of the Dolpo region. You have time to stroll around for local knowledge. Overnight at the camp.

Day 05: Trek to Tarakot (2,850m/9,348ft), 5-6 hrs walk

Today after breakfast we start our trek continues along the south bank of the river heading upstream on a good trail. A tremendous gorge with pine trees and an ingenious path built about seven meters above the river, to Tarakot where colorful terraced field greets us. Tarakot is an old fortress town built by the local people as Dzong or fort. The famed Sandul Gompa lies farther east from Tarakot and at the junction of Barbung khola and Tarup chu (river). The village stands on a hillock to the south of Bheri River at one time supervised collection of tolls for the trading caravans. Overnight camp is made by the river about 150 m below the village, near the police post or we climb a steep ridge for an hour to the village on a spur, where there are chorten in a Gompa on the edge of grassy plateau, with a solitary tree. We settle camp for overnight.

Day 6: Trek from Tarakot to Laini
Altitude: 3,160 m/10364ft

Today we will be hiking alongside Tarap Chu river. This part of trek brings us closer to Putha Huinchuli and Churen Himal. Continuing our trek after breakfast, we hike following the Tarap Chu river. After some time of walking we have to cross some suspension bridge over Tarap Chu river before we arrive at Laisicap 2775 meter. Beyond here, we chase up the easy steps for a while, which eventually bring us to Kanigaon at 2950 meter. This village is the winter residence of the people of Dho-Tarap. From the ride of the village, you can see the wonderful view of Sandul Gompa across the valley. Hiking out of the village, we final push on the steep uphill trail that take us through farm terraces and rural villages and eventually arrive at the beautiful camping site of Laini from where you can see very good waterfall.

Day 7: Trek from Laini to Toltol
Altitude: 3,580m/11742ft
Activities: Trekking

After breakfast, we walk on a steep trail for a while and then we traverse through the trail which goes through deep gorges and scary cliffs. The path along here is narrow and sometimes you can jump from one side to another. In some place the path disappears, so, we have to make our own effort to build the way out. However, the trail becomes relatively open once you pass the gorge. After a continuous ascends and descends, we hike on easy trail paved with flat stones until we arrive at Chhyugar. Walking little furthermore from this village, we will reach the camping site of Toltol for the overnight stay.

Day 8: Trek from Toltol to Dho Tarap
Altitude: 4080 m/13382ft

After breakfast, today we walk through the gradual uphill climb leading us to Kamattarka. It is the small beautiful settlement lying at the confluence of the Tarap Chu and Lang Khola. We then hike on the northwest bank of Tarap Khola to Ghyamghar, a small settlement with monastery. After a couple of hours of morning hike, we leave the narrow gorge and pass through the tree line of Juniper bush and wild roses finally arriving at Langa. After a short break at this village, we continue our hike with a uphill ascend to a small arid hill lies the settlement of Dho Tarap surrounded by the irregular stone wall.

Day 9: Acclimatization day at Dho Tarap
Altitude: 4080 m/13382ft

Today is the pleasant day free from the hassle of packing and chance to make friends with the locals who have hardly seen westerners. The Dolpo people wear home spun clothing that is sometimes dyed maroon and they favour Tibetan style somba or dhocha (boots with upturned toes) for foot wear. Both men and women often wear religious amulets and strings of coral, amber and turquoise. The people of the region are both Bon po and Nyingmapa of Buddhist sect. The Buddhist Gompa is nearby to the camp while the Bon Gompa (pre-Buddhist) is about half an hour's walk.

Day 10: Trek from Dho Tarap to Numa La Base Camp
Altitude: 4,440m/14,568ft

After the rest and exploration day at Dho Tarap village, we begin our todays trek to the Numa La Base Camp. After having breakfast in the camp, we continue our hike, enjoying the view of the lush grassland on the both side of the river. Though the walk today is not long, however the increase in altitude decreases the pace of our hiking. We slowly take an uphill trail dotted with rocks and steep landscape which reaches Tokyou at 4209 meters. Getting out of the village, we cross the suspension bridge over Kanger Khola and ascend uphill along the wild and barren rugged trail to the base camp of Numa La at 4350 meters.

Day 11: Trek from Numa La Base Camp to Danighar via Numa La Pass
Altitude: 5,190m/17,023ft

The hike today is going to be tough and will test your endurance. The path to cross the Numa La pass is difficult, which will be the electrifying and maddening experience for you. After morning breakfast, we walk on uphill trail all the way to the top ridge of Numa La. Once you reach the top ridge of the Numa La pass, you can have the mesmerizing view of the surrounding landscape. The scenery of the valleys and mountains including the Dhaulagiri massif and other distinct snow-capped peaks is so spiritually invigorating. You will also be enchanted with the dramatic views of Shering Gompa which is the house for the monks in the region. After some time of enjoying the splendid view from the top ridge of the camp, we slide down following Gyambo Khola to camp at Danighar for overnight stay.

Day 12: Trek from Danighar to Temche 4000m via Baga La Pass
Altitude: 5,070m/16,629ft

It is another technical day of Upper Dolpo Trek. The trek today goes across the Baga La Pass at 5170-meter. Right after the breakfast, we commence on our hike with a vertical uphill climb along the shabby yak trail up to the top of Baga La. Reaching the top of the Baga La, we will have the magnificent views of the surrounding landscape and snowcapped peaks of Kanjirowa Mountain ranges. The view of the peak ridgeline from the top of this pass is considered one of the most beautiful view of the entire Phoskundo Nature Experience. After spending a wonderful moment here, we descend down the pass into deep ravine at first and then cross the frozen stream to open space. The final push down thorugh the beautiful meadow; we finally arrive at our campsite of Temche.

Day 13: Trek from Temche to Ringmo
Altitude: 3,600m/11,812ft

The trek today is much easier as compared to the past two days of trekking. We start our morning hike with a downhill walk to Yak Kharka. Along the trekking trail to the Phoskundo, you will have numerous opportunity to observe the astonishing scenery of the mountain panorama and the mother nature’s beauty. Observing such beauty of the nature will make you foget all the trouble you have gone through, during all the hike. We will take a break for a while to capture the mother nature beauty into the lenses of camera and a memory to cherish for the life time. Throughout your trek today, we will be accompanied by the magnificent views of the towering cliff as well. After a continuous hike for about 3 hours of traversing through lush vegetation of pine, junipers and cypress, we eventually arrive at Ringmo. This small village is a famous Bon settlement in the region. Strolling further downhill for 30 minutes bring us to the mesmerizingly beautiful lake, Phoskundo.

Day 14: Explore around Phoskundo Lake
Altitude: 3,600m/11,812ft

Today is the day off to explore around the Phoskundo Lake and the Ringmo village. Onece we have our breakfast, we will take a hike to explore around the magnificent Lake, Phoskundo. This lake is famous for its magnificent turquoise color and spectacular scenery. Walking around this pristine fresh water lake is relaxing and enjoyable. At day time we will take a short hike to the Ringmo village and also head to Tshowa. We will also visit the 900 years old gompa nestling at the top ridge above Phoskundo lake. This sacred place is the best place to let your sprit go free. At evening, we will head back to the camp.

Day 15: Trek from Phoskundo Lake to Shyanta
Altitude: 2,250m/7,382ft

The hike today is the downhill walk to Shyanta. After having breakfast, we begin our hike towards Shyanta. At first, we slide downward to for about 3 hours until we arrive at the village of Chekpa. We then hike on a rocky trail passing through barren hills and tiny Bon Po settlements for an hour. Before we arrive at Shyanta, we begin to see the sign of tropical forest coming into our sight. Once we reach the picturesque place of Shyanta, we set up the camp for the overnight stay.

Day 16: Trek from Shyanta to Juphal
Altitude: 2,500m/8,203ft

Today is the final day of our trekking journey. After spending the night in the small town of Shyanta we will start our morning walk from this town. Leaving the Shyanta, our journey lead us to the comfortable trail towards Jhupal. On the trail, we can also find Jeeps running to and fro. However, we will trek to Jhupal, observing and exploring the nature along the way. After 6 hours of trek we will eventually reach Jhupal. We will stay at Jhupal for the night.

Day 17: Fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj and then Fly to Kathmandu

Today we will have the one last view of the wonderful region. After an early breakfast, we will board on an earliest flight to Nepalgunj from Jumla. Once we land at Nepalgunj, we will board another flight to Kathmandu. You will have a free time to explore the Kathmandu or relax before a farewell dinner.

Day 18: Departure from Nepal

Today after breakfast we start our trek continues along the south bank of the river heading upstream on a good trail. A tremendous gorge with pine trees and an ingenious path built about seven meters above the river, to Tarakot where colorful terraced field greets us. Tarakot is an old fortress town built by the local people as Dzong or fort. The famed Sandul Gompa lies farther east from Tarakot and at the junction of Barbung khola and Tarup chu (river). The village stands on a hillock to the south of Bheri River at one time supervised collection of tolls for the trading caravans. Overnight camp is made by the river about 150 m below the village, near the police post or we climb a steep ridge for an hour to the village on a spur, where there are chorten in a Gompa on the edge of grassy plateau, with a solitary tree. We settle camp for overnight.

Day 6: Trek from Tarakot to Laini

Today we will be hiking alongside Tarap Chu river. This part of trek brings us closer to Putha Huinchuli and Churen Himal. Continuing our trek after breakfast, we hike following the Tarap Chu river. After some time of walking we have to cross some suspension bridge over Tarap Chu river before we arrive at Laisicap 2775 meter. Beyond here, we chase up the easy steps for a while, which eventually bring us to Kanigaon at 2950 meter. This village is the winter residence of the people of Dho-Tarap. From the ride of the village, you can see the wonderful view of Sandul Gompa across the valley. Hiking out of the village, we final push on the steep uphill trail that take us through farm terraces and rural villages and eventually arrive at the beautiful camping site of Laini from where you can see very good waterfall.

Day 7: Trek from Laini to Toltol

After breakfast, we walk on a steep trail for a while and then we traverse through the trail which goes through deep gorges and scary cliffs. The path along here is narrow and sometimes you can jump from one side to another. In some place the path disappears, so, we have to make our own effort to build the way out. However, the trail becomes relatively open once you pass the gorge. After a continuous ascends and descends, we hike on easy trail paved with flat stones until we arrive at Chhyugar. Walking little furthermore from this village, we will reach the camping site of Toltol for the overnight stay.

Day 8: Trek from Toltol to Dho Tarap

After breakfast, today we walk through the gradual uphill climb leading us to Kamattarka. It is the small beautiful settlement lying at the confluence of the Tarap Chu and Lang Khola. We then hike on the northwest bank of Tarap Khola to Ghyamghar, a small settlement with monastery. After a couple of hours of morning hike, we leave the narrow gorge and pass through the tree line of Juniper bush and wild roses finally arriving at Langa. After a short break at this village, we continue our hike with a uphill ascend to a small arid hill lies the settlement of Dho Tarap surrounded by the irregular stone wall.

Day 9: Acclimatization day at Dho Tarap

Today is the pleasant day free from the hassle of packing and chance to make friends with the locals who have hardly seen westerners. The Dolpo people wear home spun clothing that is sometimes dyed maroon and they favour Tibetan style somba or dhocha (boots with upturned toes) for foot wear. Both men and women often wear religious amulets and strings of coral, amber and turquoise. The people of the region are both Bon po and Nyingmapa of Buddhist sect. The Buddhist Gompa is nearby to the camp while the Bon Gompa (pre-Buddhist) is about half an hour's walk.

Day 10: Trek from Dho Tarap to Numa La Base Camp

After the rest and exploration day at Dho Tarap village, we begin our todays trek to the Numa La Base Camp. After having breakfast in the camp, we continue our hike, enjoying the view of the lush grassland on the both side of the river. Though the walk today is not long, however the increase in altitude decreases the pace of our hiking. We slowly take an uphill trail dotted with rocks and steep landscape which reaches Tokyou at 4209 meters. Getting out of the village, we cross the suspension bridge over Kanger Khola and ascend uphill along the wild and barren rugged trail to the base camp of Numa La at 4350 meters.

Day 11: Trek from Numa La Base Camp to Danighar via Numa La Pass

The hike today is going to be tough and will test your endurance. The path to cross the Numa La pass is difficult, which will be the electrifying and maddening experience for you. After morning breakfast, we walk on uphill trail all the way to the top ridge of Numa La. Once you reach the top ridge of the Numa La pass, you can have the mesmerizing view of the surrounding landscape. The scenery of the valleys and mountains including the Dhaulagiri massif and other distinct snow-capped peaks is so spiritually invigorating. You will also be enchanted with the dramatic views of Shering Gompa which is the house for the monks in the region. After some time of enjoying the splendid view from the top ridge of the camp, we slide down following Gyambo Khola to camp at Danighar for overnight stay.

Day 12: Trek from Danighar to Temche 4000m via Baga La Pass
Altitude: 5,070m/16,629ft

It is another technical day of Upper Dolpo Trek. The trek today goes across the Baga La Pass at 5170-meter. Right after the breakfast, we commence on our hike with a vertical uphill climb along the shabby yak trail up to the top of Baga La. Reaching the top of the Baga La, we will have the magnificent views of the surrounding landscape and snowcapped peaks of Kanjirowa Mountain ranges. The view of the peak ridgeline from the top of this pass is considered one of the most beautiful view of the entire Phoskundo Nature Experience. After spending a wonderful moment here, we descend down the pass into deep ravine at first and then cross the frozen stream to open space. The final push down thorugh the beautiful meadow; we finally arrive at our campsite of Temche.

Day 13: Trek from Temche to Ringmo
Altitude: 3,600m/11,812ft

The trek today is much easier as compared to the past two days of trekking. We start our morning hike with a downhill walk to Yak Kharka. Along the trekking trail to the Phoskundo, you will have numerous opportunity to observe the astonishing scenery of the mountain panorama and the mother nature’s beauty. Observing such beauty of the nature will make you foget all the trouble you have gone through, during all the hike. We will take a break for a while to capture the mother nature beauty into the lenses of camera and a memory to cherish for the life time. Throughout your trek today, we will be accompanied by the magnificent views of the towering cliff as well. After a continuous hike for about 3 hours of traversing through lush vegetation of pine, junipers and cypress, we eventually arrive at Ringmo. This small village is a famous Bon settlement in the region. Strolling further downhill for 30 minutes bring us to the mesmerizingly beautiful lake, Phoskundo.

Day 14: Explore around Phoskundo Lake

Today is the day off to explore around the Phoskundo Lake and the Ringmo village. Onece we have our breakfast, we will take a hike to explore around the magnificent Lake, Phoskundo. This lake is famous for its magnificent turquoise color and spectacular scenery. Walking around this pristine fresh water lake is relaxing and enjoyable. At day time we will take a short hike to the Ringmo village and also head to Tshowa. We will also visit the 900 years old gompa nestling at the top ridge above Phoskundo lake. This sacred place is the best place to let your sprit go free. At evening, we will head back to the camp.

Day 15: Trek from Phoskundo Lake to Shyanta

The hike today is the downhill walk to Shyanta. After having breakfast, we begin our hike towards Shyanta. At first, we slide downward to for about 3 hours until we arrive at the village of Chekpa. We then hike on a rocky trail passing through barren hills and tiny Bon Po settlements for an hour. Before we arrive at Shyanta, we begin to see the sign of tropical forest coming into our sight. Once we reach the picturesque place of Shyanta, we set up the camp for the overnight stay.

Day 16: Trek from Shyanta to Juphal
Altitude: 2,500m/8,203ft

Today is the final day of our trekking journey. After spending the night in the small town of Shyanta we will start our morning walk from this town. Leaving the Shyanta, our journey lead us to the comfortable trail towards Jhupal. On the trail, we can also find Jeeps running to and fro. However, we will trek to Jhupal, observing and exploring the nature along the way. After 6 hours of trek we will eventually reach Jhupal. We will stay at Jhupal for the night.

Day 17: Fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj and then Fly to Kathmandu

Today we will have the one last view of the wonderful region. After an early breakfast, we will board on an earliest flight to Nepalgunj from Jumla. Once we land at Nepalgunj, we will board another flight to Kathmandu. You will have a free time to explore the Kathmandu or relax before a farewell dinner.

Day 18: Departure from Nepal

Today is free or last-minute shopping for souvenirs or gift to your family, friends or relatives for you until your departure flight/drive or to commence any extra trips or activities you may have booked with us. If departing, you'll be transferred to the International Airport for your departure flight to your onwards destination.
