Trip Introduction
Gokyo Valley Trek is one of the most popular offbeat treks of Everest Region. Gokyo Valley Trek unlike Everest Base Camp Trek highlights less known landmarks of the Everest Region, which are however not less interesting and fascinating natural wonders. In brief Gokyo Valley is a wonderful valley in the shadows of four 8000ers including Everest and the valleys of turquoise glacial lakes.

Like most of the treks in Everest Region, the Gokyo Valley Trek also begins at Lukla after the short scenic flight from Kathmandu. This trek is especially designed to passionate walkers who have desires to see the Everest and its surrounding from the different perspective. This moderate trek in Everest Region also best suits to those trekkers who prefer relatively quiet trails with less fellow trekkers.

Trip Highlights

* Like every other trekking trail in Nepal, the trail of Gokyo Valley Trek is amazingly fun-walking trail that goes up and down the rolling hills so many times like the waves in an ocean.
* The landscapes including the Himalayan panorama blended so well with fresh water lakes of Gokyo and the views of deep Dudh Koshi River Valley integrated perfectly with the lush vegetation of Sagarmatha National Park.
* The authentic Sherpa culture in the mountainous villages, those trekkers encounter throughout the treks in Everest Region. Gokyo Valley Trek takes trekkers to  several major villages of Khumbu, where the unique Sherpa culture and their lifestyle can be observed to the fullest. Villages like, Khumjung, Kunde and Namche are major highlights where culture prevails over nature.
* The highland monasteries, the sacred maniwalls engraved with Buddhist prayers, colorful prayer flags portraying spirituality, the memorials, chortens and the every aspect that demonstrates Tantric Buddhism of Nygingma Pa Sect.
* The incredible floral and faunal biodiversities of Sagarmatha National Park.
* The Gokyo Lakes and the Gokyo Ri from where 360 degree of Himalayan Panorama is seen.
* The closest view of four 8000ers at a time is a highlight of Gokyo Valley Trek, which is quite a rare sight during other treks in Nepal. The four 8000ers visible from Gokyo Valley include Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu and Makalu.

Basic Requirement of Health and Experiences

Landing at Tenzing Hillary Airport in Lukla is a thrilling adventure. Instantly, after making the final arrangement for the  Gokyo Valley Trek, we kick off. Trekking 200m downhill to Thado Koshi River, we cross the suspension bridge over it. The view of Mt. Kusum Kangru looming dramatically to the East is wonderful view from the bridge. Beyond the bridge the trek begins to gain altitude gradually to Ghat. Ghat is a Buddhist Village with wonderful Black Mani walls engraved with prayers in white. The final push from Ghat through scattered viallges and yak herder's camps brings us to Phakding. The first day of Gokyo Valley Trek ends at Phakding.
Explore remaining with this local village. Overnight at Mt. Lodge.

Day 03: Trek to Namche Bazaar  6-7 hrs trek
Altitude: 3440m B/L/D
The Gokyo Valley Trek today crosses suspension bridges over Dudh Koshi River five times. The first bridge we cross comes after five minutes of walk from our hotel in Phakding.  Crossing it we trek through the forested trail on the left bank of the river for 35 minutes to Taktak. Exiting out of Taktak we get to see the magnificent view of Mt. Thameserku 6608m from the viewpoint. Almost thirty minutes of gentle walk beyond the viewpoint we arrive to Banker. We cross the second bridge over Dudh Koshi River while making our way out of Banker. Nir Kumar Tamang was born in Solukhumbu in a poor family. He did not opportunities to get proper education and has to resort to manual labor from a small age to address the needs of this family.

His entry into the trekking sector was as a porter who would carry cooking stoves to trekkers' camp sites. Later he was promoted to a kitchen helper which required him to wake up the earliest of all and sleep at last.

Because of this lack of schooling, he had to work extra hard to improve his English skills. He did so by buying books and attending English lessons. His first trekking experience as a guide was the 12 days' Everest Base Camp trek. While on trek, he was asked by his guests about the garbage in the trails of Lobuche. He never forgets that one question and does everything from his side to keep trails clean.

He believes that the mountains of Nepal are extraordinary. He loves trekking the Annapurna and Everest for their sheer beauty and emotional connection. Nir Kumar loves singing and dancing. He can play the traditional musical instruments flute and madal.

Tej Karki

reviwer image

Tej Karki was born in the lowlands of Solukhumbu in the Everest Region. Mountain, thus, is a huge part of his identity. He went to school in Solukhumbu and was involved in tourism as a porter long before he moved his base to Kathmandu. When he went on a trek as a porter for the first time, he was carrying a load in excess of 30 Kg. But the mesmerizing natural beauty around him captivated him so much that he says that load felt like a mere 2 Kg. Such is his love for the mountains and nature.

He loves to share his love for the mountains to his guests and make opportunities for them to enjoy the Himalayas. Do not let his serious outlook mislead you- there is a fun loving and jocular person hidden behind the face.

He is very enthusiastic about sports, especially football. In his free time, he likes to play football, cricket and table tennis. He also loves playing chess with interested guests high up in the mountains in free time during the trek.

Advanced Adventures is the perfect mix of cost and services! We had a wonderful trip!

Advanced Adventures is the perfect mix of cost and services! We had a wonderful trip!

My husband and I looked around for a Nepalese tour company to organize our hike to Mt. Everest, and I found the perfect mix of cost and services with Advanced Adventures.  From the moment we stepped out of the Kathmandu airport to the moment we returned, we were in good hands.

We had booked their trip to EBC through Gokyo Lakes, but we had flight delays into Lukla, and I came down with the flu in Namche.  Despite the delays, our guide, Bhim, took it all in stride.

He rerouted our trek and booked our tea houses, as needed, and we even started calling him Dr. Bhim as he pulled steam remedies and other treatments from his seemingly bottomless first aid kit. He kept a steady pace for us, monitoring our health all the way, and we made it to Base Camp just fine.

If you’re thinking of trekking in Nepal, which I highly recommend, you’ll be quite happy doing it with Advanced Adventures.
