Trip Introduction

Upper Mustang Trek on the beginning of spring overlaps with the magnificent Buddhist Festival- Tiji. Tiji is derived from two Tibetan words “Ten” and “Che”, which refer to “Hopes of Dharma reigning in all worlds”. Guru Rinpoche all around Mustang spread this precious message over thousand years ago. Festival that the people of Mustang (Lo) celebrate signifies the victory of good over evil is also observed to chase demons out of Mustang performing several traditional rituals.

Three days of celebration, Tiji is a mythical festival that revolves around the myth of Dorje Jono who fought against his demon father and protected the Kingdom of Mustang. Town square occupied with natives performing as demons wearing fearsome masks and traditional flamboyant attires in authentic Tibetan music played by the monks, is worthwhile observing and capturing into cameras during Tiji.

Apart from the mythical celebration, Upper Mustang Trek during spring takes you to the fabled town of walls, which nestles at the rain shadow of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Ranges.

Dates of celebrating Tiji Festival in 2017 begin on May 14 and ends on 16th.
